Frittelle for San Giuseppe

Translated for Cinzia:

I’m ready for my arrival in London for the next supperclub event, which will take place 13 March. Along with loads of enthusiasm, I’m bringing the recipe for a special dessert this time – the frittelle di riso (rice frittelle).  This dish is rooted in the religious tradition celebrating San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph), which today is celebrated as Father’s Day.

As the holiday falls at the end of winter, it coincides with the pagan rites of agrarian purification.   Whatever was left in the fields was burned, and in villages bonfires were lit around the edges of the main piazza.  Villagers jumped the fires as they burned down, and the elderly women wove and knitted as they sang prayers to San Giuseppe.

An important part of the tradition is the preparation of the frittelle, whose recipe varies from town to town but are always present for San Giuseppe in Tuscany.  In years past, every streetcorner had a frittelle stand, and the whole town was decorated as part of the festivities.  We look forward to sharing our frittelle di riso, typical of Florence itself, with you at our Supperclub event on 13 March!
